Ambala is famous for its phulkari embroidery. Usually, phulkari is done by the women of the house, and it normally takes a long time to be completed. Sometimes it stretches to even years. Phulkari means floral work - the designs include not only flowers but also motifs and geometrical shapes. The main characteristics of phulkari embroidery are use of darn stitch on the wrong side of coarse cotton cloth with coloured silken thread.
