Pothan and Company can trace its roots back to 1932 when Pothan Pythal, inspired by the same entrepreneurial spirit which has defined so many great leaders of commerce, established a small weaving cottage named Arshabharat Textiles in Cannanore. At the time his company employed only five weavers, but it would eventually grow into the thriving commercial enterprise that it is today, utilizing a workforce of thousands and expanding beyond the world of textiles to include such diverse sectors as automobiles, restaurants, consumer goods imports and general trading. In 1942 Mr. Pythal's dream was carried on by his son Sri Narayanan Pothan who entered into his father's business and took over full management by 1945. Under his steady leadership, he steered Arshabharat Textiles towards greater fortunes and transformed it into a powerhouse of manufacturing. Eleven years later, the company which had once employed only five weavers now had a labour force of 1600. The seeds of industry planted by Mr. Pythal were growing into a mighty tree. In 1961, the company expanded beyond Asian shores and started exporting high quality fabrics to the United Kingdom. 1970 to 1979 saw a boom in the hand-loom cotton market and within the span of a decade the group experienced a massive surge in profits, driven by its exports of crepe fabrics. This rise in prosperity also triggered huge commercial diversification. In 1981, the company which had built its fortunes on fabric now ventured into the automobile market when Sri. Pothan Narayanan, together with his three sons, founded Pioneer Motors. Today, Pioneer Motors employs over 800 workers and is the authorised dealer of several prominent auto brands, including cars by Hyundai, as well as 2 wheelers from Yamaha and Honda and 4 wheelers from Piaggio, serving three districts in the Indian state of Kerala. The group's rapid expansion has never slowed down. In 1990, it boldly entered the import market and began distribution of fruits and cereals from international vendors, a commercial venture which has today grown into a major business division. In 2008 the group made history by opening its first restaurant on the island of Mauritius and also formed a successful consumer goods division, tirelessly diversifying its export sector by shipping everything from rice and spices to building materials and coir fabrics. With a sales turnover of $28 million US dollars, the group is now managed by the leading financial experts, chartered accountants, professional marketers, and the most trusted authorities on sourcing. As such, this leader of industry continues to expand and thrive, and the seeds of commerce planted by Pothan Pythal back in 1932, along with the leadership of Narayanan Pothan and his sons and grand sons, have helped it grow into the mightiest of trees. The future promises greater success for Pothan and Company, and even richer fruits from this growing commercial enterprise.
