Virupakshi Hill Banana

It has always been grown as a shade tree for young coffee. With coffee being a long-term crop, it was the Virupakshi banana that kept the cash flowing in for the farmers in the remote and hilly terrains of the Palani hills. The colour of the ripe fruit is greenish yellow; over time ripe fruits turn black. Fruits do not easily drop off from the pedicels and the keeping quality is good. BBT Virus has been the sole cause for reduction in Hill banana cultivation from 18,000 ha in 1970s to a mere 2,000 ha at present.
